Hashbrowns and History

The director of FEMA uses an unofficial scale after a disaster. He calls it the Waffle House Index. Basically it goes like this, you can asses the scale of damage based on the dependable chain. Open and serving a full menu, green. Offering only a limited menu, yellow. Closed, red. The Waffle House in Norcross kept its doors open during last January’s ice storms, providing warm shelter and meals to stranded motorists. So why do I bring this up? Because the Waffle House Museum is located here in Decatur, not far from the luxury apartments of Alexan 1133.

The museum is where Waffle House got its start back in 1955. There are now more than 1700 across 25 states, at least a dozen it seems around my hometown of Panama City. The museum houses memorabilia dating back 60 years along with a fully functioning restaurant. You can get hashbrowns smothered and capped and learn more about the history of the restaurant.

I’ve eaten many meals at Waffle Houses over the years, often when my job forced me to be out in hurricanes or on holidays. I could always count on the restaurant to be open and the servers friendly. It’s not gourmet but it’s good and good is sometimes exactly what you need.

So check out the museum honoring the familiar Southeast restaurant and enjoy a delicious breakfast while you’re there. And don’t worry, there’s fresh lettuce staying crisp in your fridge back at Alexan 1133. You can eat healthy later.
